Privacy notice

What we collect

When you sign the membership petition, we collect your full legal name, date of birth, residential address and postcode, mobile number, and email address. This information is necessary to verify your eligibility and to lodge a membership list with the relevant electoral authority for party registration.

Sensitive information

Your party membership reveals a political opinion, which is sensitive information under the Australian Privacy Act 1988. We collect this with your explicit consent, given when you sign the petition. We handle it with heightened care.

How we use your data

• To verify your identity and electoral roll eligibility.
• To lodge membership lists with electoral authorities for party registration.
• To enable you to participate in binding votes once the party is registered.
• To contact you about party matters (meetings, votes, important updates).

Data minimisation

Verification data is retained only as long as needed for the registration application. Each membership record stores your mobile number in full, because we need it to contact you and because the electoral authority contacts members directly when it samples our list. It is also stored alongside a short reference code derived from the number, which we use to detect duplicate sign-ups. That code is not a substitute for encryption and we do not present it as one.

Self-hosted infrastructure

Your membership record (name, date of birth, address, contact details and how you voted) is stored in a database on a server we own and operate. We do not host that database with a third-party cloud provider.

Two Google services do see some of your data. Google Firebase sends your verification SMS, so it receives your mobile number. Google Analytics measures site usage and, in doing so, receives your IP address and the pages you visit. Neither receives your membership record or your votes.

Who sees your data

Your details are shared only with the relevant electoral authority as part of the registration process. Authorities keep membership lists confidential and destroy/return them after verification. Your membership is private by default; you may optionally choose to appear on a public member register.

The taster quiz

You can take the quiz without being a member and without telling us who you are. We do not ask for your name or contact details, and we do not link a quiz result to a membership record. We do store each result (your two scores, and the IP address it came from) so we can show the running average and stop the same person skewing it by submitting repeatedly. An IP address can identify you indirectly, and a political score is sensitive information, so we treat that pair with the same care as the rest. If you would rather we deleted a quiz result, contact us.

Cookies and analytics

We use Google Analytics, which sets cookies in your browser and sends Google your IP address, approximate location, device type and the pages you view. We use it only to understand how many people find the site and which pages they read. You can block it with any tracker-blocking extension or your browser's privacy settings, and the site will work exactly as before. We do not run advertising pixels and we do not sell or share your data with advertisers.

Your rights

You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal information at any time. Email [email protected] or write to the Party Secretary, Timothy Yang, Balgowlah Heights NSW 2093, quoting the mobile number you signed up with. If you would rather not put your number in an email, the postal route reaches us just as well. We aim to action deletion requests within 30 days. Deleting your record removes you from the membership list, including from any list not yet lodged with an electoral authority. You may withdraw your membership by written notice at any time, and you do not need to give a reason.
